During his sophomore year at George Washington University, the Holy Spirit convicted Josh about being consistent and intentional in his church attendance. A friend encouraged him to visit CHBC. During his first visit, Pastor Mark Dever gave the opening sermon in a series studying the 9 marks of a healthy church. Josh figured hed give CHBC at least nine weeks to get the notes about what a healthy church looked like, and then hed go find one. After Mark finished the series Josh stayed, and six years later he serves CHBC as the deacon for community outreach.
His position is a relatively new one, created after the elders sensed a desire from members for more outreach opportunities. Josh primarily helps two groups of people in the CHBC communitythose who are interested in getting involved and those who want to spearhead a ministry. He plugs members into serving with projects such as Angel Tree, the youth offender program and the ESL classes. He also works with members who have a vision for a particular ministry, but arent sure about the details, like funding or access to church facilities. Hes a consultant of sorts, which ties in neatly with his day job at IBM and his enjoyment of organizing.
While he encourages members to be involved in outreach opportunities, he thinks much about how to spend his own time wisely. He enjoys running, cooking for others, and taking overseas missions trips. One passage of scripture that he turns to often is Romans 12: 1-2. I think its helpful in thinking about how we should spend our lives, and about what things are worth spending time on, said Josh.
Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of Gods mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to Godthis is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Gods will ishis good, pleasing and perfect will.Romans 12:1-2
