Kasey Culp, Administrative Assistant
Kasey grew up in Mendon, Michigan close to Indiana near Kalamazoo in a Catholic family. Her Dad spoke to her about Jesus and God often. She remembers listening to a tape of the famous basketball player, Pistol Pete Maravich, talking about what it meant to be a Christian. He said, "You have to give God a blank check for your life." Through that tape she learned the truth that God owned her life and that He was in charge, not her. She grew extensively in her knowledge of God through Bair Lake Bible Camp where she heard the gospel continually, made Christian friends, and saw a difference in the lives of believers.
Her journey to CHBC is a bit complicated. After spending 2 ½ years at Wheaton College, she eventually transferred and graduated from Albion College in Michigan. After college, she emailed a pastor she had known at Wheaton and asked him for a list of churches, anywhere in America, that would be equivalent to attending seminary for free. He suggested CHBC. She didnt act on his suggestion at first because going to DC didnt seem right at the time. However, after living on the west coast for awhile, substitute teaching in Michigan, and exploring the paralegal program at Georgetown, she eventually took a job as a nanny landing in DC. She remembered her pastors recommendation and did some heavy research before eventually coming to CHBC late one morning. The 1st person she ran into was Pastor Mark Dever and their interacting was quite amusing. He introduced himself, "Hi Im Mark Dever." Her reply was, "I know, wheres Sunday school?" She has been at CHBC over a year becoming a member in September 2004.
Mark Dever describes Kaseys job as a "traffic cop." She answers phones, makes connections, and directs the chaos. She also greets visitors, answers emails, and sends out email announcements. At times she even tends babies while others do things.
Kasey has received some strange calls in her short tenure. The men from the Bull Moose call posing as pastors and ask her to recite the 9marks in order and then backwards. Mike McKinley calls posing as a crazy pastor. She probably fields about 3 scam calls per week.
Another duty is to tame the copy machine which she affectionately calls "The Sanctifier." The interns and her are convinced there are Umpa Lumpas living in the copy machine laughing at them every time it breaks down.
In the future, Kasey hopes to be the next Jeanette Devlin. She wants to serve the Lord faithfully and be part of a healthy local church. She desires to settle down in a small town in the Midwest, the South, Latin America or Europe (pretty much anyplace where there are more trees than Starbucks Stores).
In her opinion, one of the quirkiest things about CHBC is the pastoral staff. They all work hard but it seems that whenever someone takes a break, they take it in front of her desk. She has witnessed the demonstration of exercise moves and the playing of imaginary hacky sack (juggling, card tricks, and various other impromptu comedy routines). Anytime staff walk by her desk they either bang on the counter, drum their fingers along the counter, or play with the blue bouncy ball on her desk. She has also noticed the use of several catch phrases such as "particularly helpful," "Lord willing," and "I just want to encourage you" in the midst of a rebuke.
Her best statement about the quirkiness of the staff is, "when smart people decide to pick on each other its pretty impressive because theyre good at it."
In her free time Kasey enjoys working out, reading, learning about history and literature, spending time outdoors, and taking road trips.
A passage of scripture she meditates on regularly is Job 26:7-14
He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.
He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight.
He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds over it.
He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters for a boundary between light and darkness.
The pillars of the heavens quake, aghast at his rebuke.
By his power he churned up the sea; by his wisdom he cut Rahab to pieces.
By his breath the skies became fair; his hand pierced the gliding serpent.
And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him!
Who then can understand the thunder of his power?
