FIRST THOUGHTS
In his book, Courageous Leadership, Bill Hybels, senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church, South Barrington, Ill. (www.willowcreek.org) describes ten styles of leadership, one being "the directional leader."
He writes, "There are two individuals on our board of directors with who I consult privately before I make a move at any critical intersection. While I value the input of every board member, I feel very uncomfortable moving ahead on any important issues unless these two board members give me a green light. Twice during the early years of my leadership, before I understood the contribution of this style of leadership, I chose to go against the judgment of these two men. Both times, Willow paid dearly. I have long since learned to defer to seasoned directional leaders.
"Interestingly, neither of these directional leaders feels comfortable speaking publicly. Neither exhibits many other signs of leadership. But they are directional monsters, two of the secret heroes of Willow."
