I've found that Charlotte Mason's educational ideas appeal to a diverse group of people from all aspects of the home school movement -- from unschooling to Classical education, and everything in between. I believe it's Charlotte Mason's gracious respect and love for children that touches the hearts and minds of her modern day readers.
Surprisingly enough, many of Charlotte Mason's methods can be applied individually, in connection with whatever curriculum you're currently using in your home. Don't feel you need to make an all-or-nothing commitment to these ideas. Feel free to use the techniques you find helpful for your particular situation.
One family I know has taken Mason's teachings on the formation of Habit and revolutionized their home life (not just in the area of education). Other parents have applied the idea of short lessons to their more traditional textbook curriculum and found their students progressing faster in their studies than ever before.
For those of you new to Charlotte Mason's ideas, I'm sure you have many questions. Digging into Charlotte Mason's own writings is definitely the best way to learn exactly what she taught and believed. But I frequently hear from busy homeschooling parents who just don't have the time needed to thoroughly digest the six-volume set. These parents want to grasp the basic concepts and applications as quickly as possible so they can start applying the ideas with their children. If this describes you, I recommend reading
A Charlotte Mason Education by Catherine Levison. This helpful little book will give you a quick overview of many of the practical how-to's of the method, enabling you to begin applying these techniques with your own children right away.
In September 2002, I was interviewed by Mike Farris of the Homeschool Legal Defense Assocation on his Home School Heartbeat radio program. Mike and I talked about easy ways to study Shakespeare with children. If you'd like to hear the broadcast or read the transcripts, click
