Jesus wants to show us our sin so that we can deal drastically with it.
Kingdom Building Ministries - He told her, "Go call your husband and come back" (John 4:16 NIV). [Read the entire passage: John 4:1-18]
In a psychology class, the professor told of an experiment with frogs. You can put a frog in a kettle of water and heat the water one degree every hour. The frog is cold blooded so the temperature of its body adapts to the temperature of its environment until it achieves equilibirum. The temperature can be increased all the way to boiling and the frog will not react because it does not feel the change. A frog will literally boil to death without jumping out of the water.
Our rationalization of sin works in the same way. Everyone else is doing what we are doing, so we reach the point of not even seeing our sin as sin. Here are several examples. Lust has become an accepted way of life for men. Clothing styles that some are wearing today cause others to stumble through lust. Everyone else is wearing those clothes, so it "must be okay." But, fifty years ago, it was unheard of to wear the clothes of today. Also, nearly everyone complains, but the Bible says that we should not complain (Philippians 2:14). Lying is epidemic. Gallup showed that 91% of Americans lie consistently but 60% believe that they are honest people. We have holidays today that greatly encourage coveting, idolatry and materialism. When someone drives up on our car bumper, we respond by taking our foot off the gas or even tapping our brakes in frustration because our "envelopes" have been violated. This is pride. The water is about to boil and we don't even know it!
In John 4, Jesus went against the cultural view of the day and stopped by a well close to Sychar. He talked with a Samaritan woman (something that no Jewish man would have done in that day.) The conversation immediately turned to what Jesus could do for the woman. He said that He could give her water that would cause her to never thirst again. However, when she said that she wanted that water, Jesus said something that seems strange for the context of the conversation, "Go call your husband and come back." Why did He say that? He said it because He is God and He wanted this woman to be free from her sin. He knew that she had had five husbands and the man she was with currently was not her husband. If you read further, you'll see that she not only got saved but led a whole town to Christ.

We need to jump out of the kettle and deal drastically with sin.
