Testimony: A Child of the Father

"What time I am afraid,

I will trust in thee."

Psalm 56:3 KJV

For most people a baptism is a joyful time, filled with excitement, wonder, and God's love. But, I almost missed my chance to fully join in.

Many of my friends had waded out and stood in waist deep water, waiting their turn. I delighted in their baptisms. But, I still stood frozen at the thought of water closing over my head. I begged God to help me overcome my fear. Then, as if on cue, one friend waved, and encouraged me to come on. I took a deep breath, and stepped into the lake.

My heart thrilled to see the Father's smile reflected in my friends' eyes. I took another step toward the minister, who waited for me. I felt the wind ruffle my hair. With each step I took, I felt water slosh inside my shoes and could see the lake bottom clouding with disturbed sand. I stopped to gather courage one more time. Then I looked firmly at the minister and marched toward him.

I grasped for his arm, panting, and the minister steadied me. He said, "It's OK, I've got you."

With a quick breath, I affirmed my faith in Jesus as my Saviour. Then he said, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” as he gently pushed my shoulders down.

I could see sun diamonds glimmer above me, blurred faces watched through the water over my head, and I felt my auburn hair fan out. When I rose from the water, I felt strengthened in my Father's love.

Father, help me grow stronger in my faith, so that no matter what happens, I will choose to trust in you.

I'm so glad to be your child.

Amen
