Scientists tell the journal Nature that the breakthrough will one day be able to help couples struggling with infertility and inherited diseases, as well as extend menopause in women.
Researchers say they are about five years away from producing sperm and eggs mature enough to create an embryo.
To achieve this scientific feat, they used human embryonic stem cells and treated them with proteins to stimulate the growth of germ cells.
The practice would also have to clear several ethical and safety hurdles before being allowed in the U.S.
