>>>>>FIRST THOUGHTS
FOOTPRINTS OR MONUMENTS?  Eugene H. Peterson, writing in “A Long Obedience in the Same Direction,” notes “For those who choose to live no longer as tourists, but as pilgrims, the Psalms of Ascents [Psalms 120 to 134] combine all the cheerfulness of a travel song, with the practicality of a guidebook and map. Their unpretentious brevity is excellently described by William Faulkner.  ‘They are not monuments, but footprints.  A monument only says, ‘At least I got this far,’ while a footprint says, ‘This is where I was when I moved again.’” (InterVarsity Press)

COMMISSIONER ROBERT A. WATSON TO RECEIVE 2002 CHRISTIAN MANAGEMENT AWARD.
Christian Management Association’s 2002 Christian Management Award will be presented to Commissioner Robert A. Watson, retired national commander of The Salvation Army, U.S.A. The presentation will be made Monday evening, March 4, at CMA California 2002 in Anaheim, Calif.  Commissioner Watson will be the 23rd person to receive Christian Management Association’s highest honor.

Watson is the co-author of the new book, The Most Effective Organization in the U.S. (Leadership Secrets of The Salvation Army), published by Crown Business.  The book’s title comes from the statement made by Peter Drucker, “The Salvation Army is by far the most effective organization in the U.S.  No one even comes close to it with respect to clarity of mission, ability to innovate, measurable results, dedication, and putting money to maximum use.”

Also on Monday evening, in the first award of its kind to an organization, the CMA board of directors will be presenting a second Christian Management Award to a ministry: The Salvation Army.  Accepting the award will be Commissioner John Busby, the current national commander of The Salvation Army.

John Pearson, CEO of Christian Management Association commented, on behalf of the board of directors, “CMA members salute these two leaders and the breath-taking leadership their women and men have demonstrated for so many years—and, in God’s sovereign timing, especially since September 11.  We’re grateful for their faithful and significant participation in CMA—and the world impact of their ministry—and we’re privileged to honor The Salvation Army with CMA’s highest honor.”

Watson served as an active commissioned officer in The Salvation Army for 44 years, four of them as National Commander, the highest-ranking officer in the United States.  He and his wife, Commissioner Alice Watson (retired), now make their home in Riverview, Fla.  During his tenure in the national headquarters in Alexandria, Va., Watson also served as a member of the CMA board of directors.

Commissioner Watson joins the growing list of Christian leaders who have been honored by Christian Management Association. The first recipient, in 1981, was Richard Schmidt of Foursquare Missions International in Los Angeles. Schmidt passed away in 2000.

In the last decade, recipients of the Christian Management Award have included: Bill Bright (2001), Olan Hendrix (2000), Harold L. Myra and Paul D. Robbins (1999), John R. Corts (1998), the Honorable Rollin A. Van Broekhoven (1997), Virginia Patterson (1996), Clarence Reimer (1995), Commissioner James Osborne (1994), Paul D. Nelson (1993), Stephen E. Holbrook (1992), Stephen Douglass (1991) and Peter Drucker (1990).

FLEX TIME: HIGH PRIORITY MORE CMA MEMBERS.  Flex time is highly valued and organizations who participated in the just-published CMA survey are giving flexibility to their staff and leaders.  Nearly half (44 percent) said that the desire for flex time is impacting their compensation policies significantly.  One-third (35 percent) are offering flex time year-round and eight percent more in the summer.  Working from home is a growing phenomenon among Christian organizations we surveyed, according to David Schmidt, president of J. David Schmidt & Associates, Wheaton, Ill., the consulting firm that conducted the survey (www.wiseplanning.net).  Presently, two-thirds allow selected employees to work from home, and seven percent more plan to introduce this option in the next two years.

COMPARE BENEFITS OF CMA MEMBERS.  The above data and editorial analysis on compensation will be available for purchase at CMA California 2002.  To order the “Christian Management Association/Capin Crouse LLP Compensation Handbook for Christian Ministries 2002,” download the order form from www.CMAonline.org or call the CMA fax-on-demand service at 800-765-5817 and request Doc. #404.  CMA Premier Members (five members) and CMA Founders Council Members (20 members) will automatically receive one complimentary handbook, which will be sent to the CMA “contact person” at your ministry in the next two weeks. The book sells for $249 for members and $349 for non-members.

CAPIN CROUSE HELP LINE.  An innovative feature in this year’s CMA compensation handbook is the “help line” service offered by Capin Crouse LLP. The financial and management consulting firm, with offices across the country, is offering three levels of compensation help line services:

#1) For quick answers to commonly asked questions or basic explanations of material in the handbook, call their Help Line at 800-370-8776.

#2)  For a brief consultation, call to schedule a time to speak with one of their compensation professionals.  The cost is $25 to $50 for up to 15 minutes, which will be charged to your credit card.

#3) When available data and resources don’t address your unique situation and you need more customized consultation, their experienced professionals will have the wisdom and answers you need.  Typical services might include: 1) Determining compensation for positions that require specialized experience or have uncommon demands; 2) Development of a compensation philosophy aligned with your ministry’s vision; and/or 3) Customized surveys to collect information on specialized positions or issues.

SPEAKING OF COMPENSATION…the Forbes annual list of billionaires is out at www.forbes.com/billionaires. Only 497 people qualified for the list this year, down 83 from a year ago. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates stayed on top for the eighth year in a row, although he lost $6 billion in the last 12 months.  He’ll have to scrape by with a net worth of just $52.8 billion.

IS IT OK TO MAKE PERSONAL CHARGES TO YOUR COMPANY CREDIT CARD?  In a recent “Non-Profit E-mail Alert,” John Butler at Capin Crouse LLP warned clients and readers that various state laws govern unauthorized loans to some directors and officers.  The leader of a charity in Indiana recently resigned due to a controversy, covered by the media, when he made personal charges on a company credit card. Butler writes, “We recommend you review your policies and practices for use of organization credit cards and purchase orders, to reduce the risk of such front page articles.”  To subscribe to this email service, simply type the word "subscribe" into the subject line of your message and send to: Email-alert@capin-crouse.com.
